Global Shapers of Caracas Planting Dreams at María May School

Global Shapers of Caracas Planting Dreams at María May School

Caracas, March 13, 2016.

The Global Shapers of Caracas, held on Thursday, March 10, the first edition of their new Community Intervention Project «Planting Dreams», on the occasion of the celebration of the 54th anniversary of the María May Municipal School, located in the El Calvario neighborhood, El Hatillo. 30 6th grade students, 17 volunteers and the Global Shapers participated, forming a team to achieve a green mural made of recyclable materials in which 96 plants were planted and educational and civic values were shared.

The main objective of the activity is to promote a process of transformation of public spaces and that this is a vehicle for training in values. «Planting Dreams» teaches children, through a circuit of stations that is part of the methodology of the organization Tracing Spaces founded and directed by Ana Vargas, shaper of the Hub Caracas. The process of constructing the mural was accompanied by a formative dynamic in which human values are shared that are indispensable for planting and achieving any dream or goal, such as respect, discipline, perseverance, effort and teamwork. These values are part of the methodology of the organization «Yo Bailo la Vida», directed by another shaper of the Hub Caracas, Gabriela Alfonso. Raising awareness about environmental conservation and promoting the practice of recycling in the communities is also an important part of the activity. We have the support of the Mayor’s Office of El Hatillo, where Alexandra Winkler is Director of Social Development and coordinated the logistics of the refreshments, transportation and liaison with the school.

The experience of different Shapers in personal social projects and different visits to Educational Units to talk with Directors, Academic Coordinators, Social Workers and Representatives, allowed the team to identify improvement opportunities for the students. Bullying, the importance of work and living together, as well as the absence of a creative dialogue about the purpose, talent and skills of each child and adolescent, inspired the design of this project, since it can contribute to the work of these areas in a creative and different way.

The activity began with a walk through the El Calvario neighborhood to get to know the context of the school and understand where the children we work with come from. Everyone involved worked actively throughout the morning, putting into practice all the values taught and emphasizing the importance of modeling as the main vehicle for learning. The Global Shapers would like to do more «Planting Dreams» interventions and do them on a larger scale. At this time, they are planning the 4th edition of the Interactive Panel: Reasons to Live in Venezuela, which will take place at the UCAB on April 13th.
